Tips & Info

~~~
The average horse
consumes 12 gall-
ons of water a
day, so change his
water frequently.
~~~
Clean your horses
hooves along with
each grooming and
after each ride
(especially after
trail rides or
riding on rough
terrain).

~~~
Chips and cracks
in the hooves are
a sign of dryness.
Applying special
hoof oil can help
treat and prevent
this.
~~~
Most horses like
the taste of
paint. This is
why it you need
to use lead-free
paints on your
fences and stall
doors.

~~~
Don't give an
over-heated horse
excessive amounts
of water. Wait
until he is cooled
down, instead.
Horse Sickness and Treatment
COLIC
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Uneasiness, Pawings the ground, violent rolling(usually
grunting & thrashing out with for-legs), and swinging
his head towards his flanks on either side.
WHAT CAUSES COLIC??:Over-eating, spoiled or moldy feed &
hay, and eating while fatigued(among other causes).
TREATMENT
Call your vet immediatley!!!!
ROUND WORMS
WHAT ARE ROUND WORMS?
A white parasite that lives in the small intestines.
They usually grow to be 6-22 inches in length.
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
Small numbers of round worms almost never cause any
symptoms. Large numbers, however, can cause loss
of condition, irregularity of the bowels, and some-
times even colic.
TREATMENT
If your normal paste wormer fails, your veteranarian
should give your horse something to rid him of the
annoying parasites.
THRUSH
SIGNS & SYMPTOMS
A very foul odor, with or withour a dark discharge
from the cleft of the frog.
WHAT CAUSES THRUSH?
Long periods of time in unsanitary living conditions.
TREATMENT
In most cases of thrush, a germicidal dressing or a
special soak will clear it up. But in extreme cases
where the thrush has gone for an extended amount of
time untreated, serious medical attention may be
neccesary.
Facts, Fiction, & other useful info
 The normal body temperature of a horse
at rest is 100'F, but can be a degree
higher or lower.
 It used to be believed that you could
tell a horses temperature or if it was sick
by feeling it's ears. It has been found that
this method is very inaccurate.
 A horses pulse rate is 36-40 beats per
minute at rest.
 A horses age can be determined by his
teeth.
 The stomache of a horse has a maximum
capacity of 4 gallons but it functions most
efficiently on 2 1/2 gallons.
 At rest, a horse breaths 8-16 times per
minute.
